1. Yoga Vasistha
by Maharishi Valmiki translated by Swami Venkatesananda
๐ Topics: Self-Inquiry, Nonduality, Yoga, Meditation
๐ Description: This is my favorite spiritual scripture, and for a period of 3 years was the only book I read. It’s a syncretic text, seamlessly mixing the best of Buddhism, Yoga, and Vedanta. The scripture is based on a long discourse between Prince Rama and Sage Vasistha on the topics of spiritual awakening and liberation. Young Rama becomes dissatisfied with life rejecting his princely duties, and, in response, his father the king, sends for Vasistha to tutor him in the ways of wisdom.
The scripture unfolds as multilayered stories within stories with mind-bending tales of space travel, wars, demons, gods, romance, and alternate realties. Woven throughout are the most exquisite, poetic analogies and similes that bring to life the profound spiritual teachings shared throughout the scripture. There are multiple translations of this text. My favorite is Vasistha’s Yoga, however I’m providing a free translation below.
๐ Key Takeaway: This ancient text blends philosophy, poetry, and spirituality to guide readers on the path to self-realization. Its stories within stories serve as profound metaphors for the journey of awakening, reminding us that reality is as vast and varied as our consciousness.

2. I Am That
by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
๐ Topics: Self-Inquiry, Nonduality
๐ Description:ย What can be said about this spiritual classic? The book is a compilation of discourses between Sri Nisargadatta and seekers who came to seek his guidance. This book was a revelation to me in the beginning of my spiritual journey, and a text I share often with clients.
Maharaj’s words hit like a hammer on the conditioning of the mind and ego. It’s influence only grows as time goes on with many modern spiritual teachers like Eckhart Tolle heavily influenced by Maharaj’s teachings. Throughout the discourses, Sri Nisargadatta drives seekers back again and again to their sense of beingness, state of presence, and ‘I Am’ as their primary nature.
He adeptly navigates challenging questions on war, violence, death and human suffering resolving all back into our transcendent nature. Maharaj’s teachings in I Am That emphasize earnestness in spiritual practice (sadhana), consistent Self-inquiry into the sense of I Am, and the importance of the guru in attaining liberation.
๐ Key Takeaway: Nisargadatta Maharajโs teachings cut through the layers of ego and illusion, consistently guiding seekers back to the essence of their being. The book emphasizes the importance of Self-inquiry and the realization that our true nature is beyond the mind.

Autobiography of a Yogi was, and continues to be, one of the most popular influences for seekers looking for truth on their spiritual path. The book is the life-story of Yogananda from when he was a boy, to meeting his his guru and learning about the science of meditation taught by the Kriya Yoga tradition, and eventually bringing the teachings to the West.

4. Strength To Love
by Martin Luther King Jr.
๐ Topics: Christianity, Nonviolence, Social Change
๐ Description: I stumbled upon this book in the most unexpected way during a trip to Sri Lanka in 2019. Ever since, MLK’s teachings have been a guiding light on my journey. Strength to Love is a collection of sermons written and edited by MLK. It captures the essence of his spoken words in all their powerful and persuasive glory. The social issues that MLK addresses throughout his sermons like civil rights, the military industrial war complex, and the corruption of government, media and corporations are more relevant than ever.ย MLK taught that the universal power of love and the means of nonviolence were the only ways that true societal reform are possible. The type of love shared by MLK is not a sentimental love, it’s a love based on great strength, wisdom and endurance in the face of injustices everywhere.
๐ Key Takeaway: MLK’s powerful sermons highlight the transformative power of love and nonviolence in the struggle for social justice. His teachings encourage us to face adversity with courage and wisdom, rooted in a deep spiritual foundation.

5. The Bhagavad Gita
by Maharishi Vyasa
๐ Topics: Yoga, Devotion, Meditation
๐ Description:ย Another spiritual classic that speaks for itself. The Bhagavad Gita is the story of Arjuna as he is counseled by his charioteer, Krishna, on the eve of a battle between Arjuna and his kinsmen. Considered one of the most influential spiritual texts in the world, the Bhagavad Gita shares profound, yet practical spiritual teachings for those living in the human world. The setting of a battlefield is an apt example for the daily challenges we face between our higher and lower natures. Throughout the text, Krishna beautifully and concisely expounds the yogic principles and paths for unifying our individual sense of self with the ultimate reality.
๐ Key Takeaway: The Gita offers timeless guidance on how to navigate lifeโs battles with wisdom and devotion. It teaches us that true liberation comes from uniting our individual self with the ultimate reality, regardless of the challenges we face.

6. Master Key of Self-Realization
by Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj
๐ Topics: Nonduality, Self-Inquiry
๐ Description: Sri Siddharameshwar was Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj’s guru. His teachings are for advanced seekers on the path who have a deep desire for final liberation. Throughout the text, he describes inquiry into the four traditional bodies of Vedanta: physical (waking), subtle (dreaming), causal (sleep), and the fourth (turiya). Like Sri Nisargadatta, Sri Siddharameshwar’s words hit forcefully on attachment to the ego and reinforce a strong dispassion for the world and human life. His method of teaching and inquiry is deep and powerful for those who are ready to pursue it.
๐ Key Takeaway: Siddharameshwar Maharajโs teachings push seekers to transcend the ego and dive deep into the layers of consciousness. This text is a powerful guide for those ready to pursue the highest truth with unwavering dedication.

7. Crest-Jewel of Discernment (Vivekacudamani)
by Adi Shankaracharya
๐ Topics: Self-Inquiry, Vedanta, Nonduality
๐ Description:ย This scripture is one of the foundational texts of Advaita Vedanta, the philosophy of nonduality. You will not found a better written, more comprehensive exposition of traditional Advaita Vedanta philosophy than Vivekacudamani. The text emphasizes the importance of viveka (discrimination) between the real and the unreal, the eternal and the temporary. It asserts that the ultimate reality is Brahman (the absolute, unchanging truth) and that the individual self (Atman) is identical with Brahman. The work guides the seeker through the process of self-inquiry, explaining concepts such as Maya (illusion), the nature of the world, and the characteristics of an enlightened being.
Vivekacudamani stresses the importance of a qualified guru, detachment from worldly pursuits, and the practice of meditation and self-reflection. It outlines the four qualifications necessary for spiritual liberation: discrimination, dispassion, six virtues (tranquility, self-control, withdrawal, forbearance, faith, and focus), and a burning desire for liberation. These qualifications are the model for the virtues that I pursue with clients. The text concludes by describing the state of self-realization, where one experiences the nondual nature of reality and attains ultimate freedom from the cycle of birth and death.
๐ Key Takeaway: Adi Shankaracharyaโs classic text provides a roadmap for spiritual seekers, emphasizing the importance of discrimination between the real and unreal. It calls for a disciplined practice of meditation, self-inquiry, and detachment from worldly pursuits.

9. Autobiography of a Jnani
by Rajiv Kapur & Ed Muzika
๐ Topics: Nonduality, Kriya Yoga, Personal Experience
๐ Description: This is a very personal text for me, since it was written by my first spiritual teacher Ed Muzika, and my present teacher Rajivji. A jnani is the name of an Enlightened being in the Advaita Vedanta tradition. The title of the book is an homage to Paramhansa Yogananda’s book, Autobiography of a Yogi, since Rajivji’s path was heavily influenced by Kriya Yoga as well as Advaita Vedanta. The book records the conversations and guidances that Ed shared with Rajivji as he was going through his nondual awakening. The text is unique in that it shares many of Rajivji’s personal experiences, including the subjective experience of deep states of consciousness and absorption, that are not commonly found in other spiritual books or scriptures.
๐ Key Takeaway: This personal narrative offers unique insights into the journey of spiritual awakening, blending the teachings of Kriya Yoga and Advaita Vedanta. It emphasizes the importance of guidance from a teacher and the deep inner work required for self-realization.

10. The Wanderling
by The Wanderling
๐ Topics: Zen, Personal Experience, Nonduality
๐ Description: This isn’t a book, it’s a website, but I’m including it anyway, since it’s wiki-like layout is rich with content that could be included in several books. The Wanderling is an anonymous spiritually enlightened being, and from what I’ve gathered, he’s well into his 90’s now. When I first found his website, I would scroll through for hours and hours on end reading the content and stories there until my brain couldn’t absorb any more. On his website he lays out his life story beginning when he was a boy in the 1940’s and 50’s including his love for comics, cars, and the lifestyle of the time. His story is an incredible one and lives true to his name “The Wanderling” with his journeys taking him around the world, through wars, into remote Burmese spiritual retreats, brushes with death, UFOs, Jamaican shamans, and meeting famous actresses of his day. Within the web of stories, footnotes and pictures are deep teachings on Zen Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta, and his own insights into the spiritual journey. It was through his “Awakened Teachers Forum” that I found Ed Muzika. Definitely not to be missed.
๐ Key Takeaway: This extensive online resource is a treasure trove of spiritual wisdom, blending personal stories with teachings on Zen Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta, and beyond. It reminds us that the spiritual journey is as diverse and unpredictable as life itself.

11. The Hero With A Thousand Faces
by Joseph Campbell
๐ Topics: Comparative Religion, Heroes Journey
๐ Description: This was the book that shifted me from philosophy to spirituality. It’s definitely not an easy read, and there are more accessible ways to learn about the Hero’s Journey, but for my own path, this book will forever mark a fundamental shift from external pursuit of truth in the objective world of science and philosophy into an internal pursuit of spiritual awakening. Most know Campbell for his explanation of the Hero’s Journey, or “monomyth.” What most people don’t realize about the Hero’s Journey, is that Campbell formalized it from patterns he saw that put spiritual transformation as the essence of the hero’s quest. When I read the end of the book, and learned that the greatest boon that a hero can bring back to the world was their own enlightenment, I immediately became fascinated by the concept. From his book, I saw that it’s our own spiritual awakening that is the greatest gift we can offer the world, and so began my formal spiritual path.
๐ Key Takeaway: Campbellโs exploration of the Heroโs Journey reveals that the quest for spiritual transformation is a universal human experience. It inspires readers to view their own life journey as a path toward awakening and self-discovery.
